Event Report
The symposium began at 10:00 in the education room of Bird Rescue Center Naarden, where host of the day Willemijn (FFN Academy Utrecht) welcomed us. The first speaker, Dion van der Veen, covered the fundamentals of bird rescue, discussing its necessity, challenges, and rehabilitation processes. He illustrated key points with real-world examples before leading a thought-provoking debate: should financial support go directly to bird rescues or be allocated to farmers to prevent harm to birds in the first place? The discussion sparked diverse perspectives.
After a short break, Sharon Lexmond from Bird Rescue Den Haag spoke about the unique challenges of rescuing seabirds, highlighting their sensitivity to handling, captivity, and mainland fungi. She talked about proper handling techniques for these sharp-billed birds and explained their rehabilitation journey. Following a Q&A, we had a lunch break.
Next, we had a guided walk through the facility, showcasing the step-by-step process birds undergo upon arrival. We explored the treatment room, sickbay, incubator, and recovery area, learning how different species receive specialized care. The tour concluded with the outdoor aviaries, designed for various bird groups—pigeons, songbirds, raptors, waterfowl, and larger birds like storks and herons—each tailored for optimal rehabilitation.
Returning to the education room, Lisa van der Staay gave a talk on bird medical care, covering anatomy, common injuries, and temporary first-aid measures. She addressed fractures, trauma, eye conditions, parasites, zoonotic diseases like Avian Influenza, intoxications, and pollution-related injuries from oil spills, fishing wire, and glue.
Our final speaker, Erik Bruining, discussed the management of a rescue center, emphasizing collaboration with fellow rescue centers, government agencies, and the press. He shared insights from his 15-year tenure and his future goals before retirement.
To conclude the day, we presented the center with a special nest box bearing the FFN Academy name, to be placed in their garden. Each speaker also received a nest box as a token of appreciation. We wrapped up with drinks, snacks, and networking before closing the center for the day.
