The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) is a private not-for-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of coastal habitats and aquatic resources on Sanibel and Captiva and in the surrounding watershed ( The SCCF Marine Laboratory is a member of NAML/SAML and the Florida Institute of Oceanography (FIO) and has 6 resident staff, two of whom are Ph.D. Research Scientists. SCCF is a drug-free workplace and the successful applicant will be drug tested within 2 weeks of starting the position.

Qualifications (Skills, Abilities, Education, Licenses, Certificates): A minimum of a B.S. required in marine, estuarine or environmental science with 2-3 years of relevant experience.  Experience with boats and field work required. This should include small boats to 22′ and must be able to trailer and launch boats.   Familiarity with calibration, maintenance and field deployment of water quality sondes (YSI) is preferred. Must be a certified SCUBA diver. Advanced certification or scientific diving experience preferred.  Must be available to work extended hours when needed, including occasional evenings and weekends.  Must be able to swim and lift 50 lbs.  Must be physically able to do field work often under hot and humid circumstances.  Must have a valid driver’s license.  College level chemistry and marine science coursework preferred. PC experience, w/Excel, Powerpoint, SigmaPlot preferred.  Must be able to follow detailed protocols and established QA/QC procedures.

Job Functions:

Successful candidate will assist in preparing water quality sondes for long term deployment, maintenance and calibration; services Seabird Coastal sondes used in the River, Estuary and Coastal Observing Network (RECON) (; maintains and calibrates YSI sondes; Aids in other lab research, monitoring and associated restoration efforts in the Caloosahatchee River, San Carlos Bay and neighboring region. Analyzes data and publishes related results with other Lab staff.  The Research Assistant will enter data; assist with the generation of graphs, reports, summaries and related documentation as required. Laboratory duties may include sampling, sorting, measuring and associated tasks. Trains and oversees volunteers and interns to help perform routine field and lab work.

Additional Requirements/Training/Experience

Able to lift sampling gear, swim, snorkel and dive with appropriate certifications; operate and demonstrate competency at trailering small boats.  Prefer experience with maintenance and operation of Seabird Coastal, YSI, and Fondriest data loggers and sondes.  Assists with trailer, boat, and vehicle maintenance.

Salary:  $34,000 plus health insurance and 401K
